Today I ran across this issue. You open Mail on your Mac running Lion with any IMAP email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, Thirdparty server) and Mac Mail randomly deletes the email messages after it fetches new mail. You can verify this issue by shutting down your Mail app and viewing that messages in fact exist on the IMAP server. Then you open Mail and the emails are deleted as soon as the check activity is complete. There are no filters or rules running behind the scenes.

A ton of people on this thread on the Apple website are discussing and running into the same issue.

There are apparently 2 ways to fix this issue:

The first one is to simply disable “Use IDLE command if the server supports it” from the Advanced settings for your Account, as shown above.

The second fix is to wipe out all your emails and accounts and start all over. This method is pretty risky and I don’t think you should try it unless you really know what you’re doing. To do this, quit Mail, then using Terminal, move all the files in ~/Library/Mail/V2/ out into another location. Then Open Mail and recreate all your accounts.

Side note regarding Gmail and Priority Inbox
Personally I ran into this disappearing mail issue with Lion when I realized that Gmail was assigning some emails the Important Label without me knowing it. These emails were also skipping the Inbox. So basically, anything the Google deemed “Important” was never being show to me in Mail. How ironic right? The fix was to go into the Inbox settings in Gmail and Set these options:

Inbox Type: Classic (The Priority Inbox drives me insane personally)
Importance Markers: Show Markers (I tried using the No Markers option but it was causing the emails not to appear in my Mac Mail Inbox)
Filtered Mail: Override Filters (Again this option is here to leave messages in your inbox)
And finally in Lion Mail make sure to disable the IDLE option for the account.

Having done all this, I still don’t fully trust that Gmail is not putting things in the Important folder, so I have turned on the Show in IMAP feature for that label in Gmail Settings and check that folder once in a while in Mail.

I am using Mail Version 5.1 (1251/1251.1) for your reference.

Let me know if you are having similar issues with either Gmail Importance mail disappearing or Lion Mail deleting emails automatically.

WordPress 2.5 is out with tons of sexy new features and a super slick layout. I was hesitant even though it looked really hot. Until I found probably the best WordPress Plugin ever created called “WordPress Automatic Upgrade” from Techie-Buzz. You install it and it walks you through a quick backup and upgrade process which takes less than 5 minutes.

I am truly impressed with both WP2.5 and the Automatic Upgrade plugin. The best user experience I’ve had upgrading blogging software, ever!

With 2.5 you get a cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard along with Built-in galleries, EXIF extraction, Multi-file upload with progress bar, Tag management, Search posts and pages, Friendlier visual post editor, Few-click plugin upgrades, Concurrent editing protection, Password strength meter, lots of security fixes, Media buttons, Custom Sizes for Thumbnails, and more.

Apple released Safari 3.1 (525.13) for both Mac and Windows users today which comes with a bunch of changes and improvements over 3.0.x series. Here are the set of changes included in the new release.

Developer Menu

The first thing you will notice is the addition of the “Develop” menu (Preferences/Advanced/Show Develop menu in menu bar) item with the following tasks:

Open Page with: (Other browsers installed on your system including FireFox, Internet Explorer, Opera)

User Agent: Set you user agent from the list of options, or enter your own user-agent. Finally! This was previously part of the hidden debug menu and you had no way of specifying a custom user-agent. The other exciting additions here are the ability to set your user-agent as Mobile Safari 1.1.3 for either iPhone or the iPod touch.

You can also pull up the Web Inspector, Error console, Network Timeline and a Snippet Editor. Lastly the Developer menu allows you to disable various browser features such as Caches, Images, CSS Styles, JavaScript, Runaway JavaScript Timers, and Site-Specific Hacks. You can now also edit CSS in the Web Inspector. More on these in a later post.

Standards Support

Support for CSS 3 web fonts using CSS @font-face rules. check out what can be done with downloadable fonts in these working samples here, here, here, here, here, and here. The CSS and a sample web font are show below. If you are using Safari 3.1 you should see a cool font.

@font-face {

  src: url(http://www.domain.com/Acorn___.ttf) format("truetype");
}

@import "/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/webfonts.css";

Safari 3.1

Support for CSS transforms and transitions. Below are some demos of these.

Here is a sample of the -webkit transform CSS which is now supported by Safari 3.1. Click on the Safari logo to rotate it 1440 degrees.

The following Safari logo is skewed 35 degrees using -webkit-transform: skew(45deg, 0deg).

The following image changes its scale using -webkit transform:scale() to zoom in 30% when you mouse over it.

Support for HTML 5 <video> and <audio> elements. Watch out Adobe and Flash. Here is a demo of the video tag. There is also added support for SVG images in <img> elements and CSS images and SVG advanced text.

Support for offline storage for Web applications in SQL databases. That means you can now store your databases locally on the client’s machine. Here’s some sample JavaScript to do the client side databases. Check out this demo that shows you how it works.

database.executeSql("SELECT * FROM test", function(result1) {
   // do something with the results
   database.executeSql("DROP TABLE test", function(result2) {
     // do some more stuff
     alert("My second database query finished executing!");
   });
});

Running the CSS3 Selector tests reveals that Safari 3.1 has full support for CSS3 Selectors while FireFox 2 and IE 7 are still playing catch up.

Performance Improvements

Apple claims that Safari 3.1 “executes JavaScript up to 6 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 4 times faster than Firefox 2″. Performance measured in seconds. Testing conducted by Apple in March 2008 on a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based iMac system running Windows XP Professional SP2, configured with 1GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 2600 with 256MB of VRAM. HTML and JavaScript benchmarks based on VeriTest’s iBench Version 5.0 using default settings. Testing conducted with a beta version of Safari; all other browsers were shipping versions. Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection, and other factors.” I tested IE7, FF2, and Safari 3.1 with 3 JavaScript performance testers and the Acid 3 test kit. The tools used are
1. Acid3 tests.
2. JavaScript speed test written by Jason Orendorff
3. SunSpider test kit from WebKit.org
4. slickspeed test from Mootools.net

Here are the results in milliseconds from the tests which seem to agree with the results found by Apple. You can see that Safari 3.1 does in fact have a much more efficient JavaScript processing engine, and is three quarters of the way there when comes to passing the Acid3 tests.

The latest release of the iPhone SDK from Apple comes with an array of new Mac utilities for developing iPhone specific software. One of the new tools included with the iPhone SDK beta is the Aspen Simulator. Aspen is an iPhone simulator that developers can test their apps on which emulates all of the the features and functionality of the iPhone. For example you can use the mouse to swipe the page up, down, even pinch and more.The Aspen Simulator app is located in the folder: /Developer/Platforms/AspenSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications and has a few of the basic iPhone apps including Contacts, Settings, and most importantly mobile Safari. Using mobile Safari is in Aspen Simulator is a nice way to test out your webapps and see how they would look like on the iPhone. The problem I have found so far in this release is that the user-agent of the Safari browser is not set as an iPhone. This is problematic if you are doing some sort of user-agent sniffing using JavaScript in your webapp in order to show the iPhone specifc version of your site. Here is a screenshot of the Safari in Aspen Simulator and the user agent string. I used a basic alert statemnet to get this and the value is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Aspen Simulator; U; Aspen 1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1 Mobile/5A147p Safari/5525.7

This means if you load up sites that only look right on the iPhone they won’t render correctly on the Aspen Simulator. An example of this is the Yahoo Ajax Flickr website designed specifically for the iPhone. This page renders correctly if you’re on an iPhone, but will show you the basic mobile version if it doesn’t see iPhone in your user-Agent. Next version of Aspen will hopefully have an option to easily edit the user agent string of the Safari browser. For reference the mobile Safari app is located in this folder:

/Developer/Platforms/AspenSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/AspenSimulator1.2.sdk/

Launchy – Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!

If you use Miranda IM as your instant messaging app in Windows and you want to use Google Talk which uses the Jabber protocol, you can use these steps to setup an additional Jabber plugin for Miranda and configure it to use the Google servers.

This will allow you to use both a regular Jabber account and GTalk simultaneously withing Miranda.

From the Miranda Wiki

Miranda can handle as many multiple connections to different accounts as one might need. The way it’s done in Miranda requires the user to clone the dll file for the appropriate protocol as many times as many accounts of that protocol he wants to stay connected to at the same time.
To connect to multiple AIM/ICQ/Jabber/MSN/Yahoo and other protocols you have to:

Turn off Miranda

Browse to the Plugins directory

Rename the protocol’s dll file to a preffered name, for example: ‘aim_1.dll’ or ‘aim_home.dll’ etc.

Copy the renamed dll file to a different directory

Rename the copied dll file to a name that will let to easily distinguish the accounts, for example: ‘aim_2.dll’ or ‘aim_work.dll’ etc.

Move the just renamed dll file back to the Plugins directory

Once you have that setup start up Miranda and configure your new GTalk DLL with these settings from the Google Talk Support page for Miranda.

From time to time you need to capture a web site in the form of an image. While you can easily use the Ctrl+Alt+PrtSc for windows or Command+Shift+4 in Mac, you might want to screen a site that is tall and or wide and requires scrolling to fully view in your browser. You also might want to perform multiple screen captures of various pages in various web browsers or only grab sections of a page. Below is a list of Windows, OSX and Linux tools you can use to take browser based screenshots in FireFox, Internet Explorer and Safari.

While there are paid services such as Browser Cam that do cross-browser screen captures, I tend to prefer using software since I can fine-tune the results to my liking, and I can see the results immediately.

add-ons via Firefox

ScreenGrab – This FireFox extension installs as an icon in the lower right corner of the he status bar. This plugin uses the Gecko canvas for faster processing. IT allows for capturing either a selection, the visible window or the entire page. You can customize the options to save either a PNG or JPG image and add a timestamp to the filename, and captures frames and flash files sections without any problems.

PageSaver - This alternate extension from Pearl Crescent installs two new entries in the context menu of FireFox, allowing to save either the visibile portion or the entire page, although it does not allow for saving a selection. It has a slew of options however. For example you can assign a keyboard shortcut which is a great time saver. You can also set your image filename patterns and choose the format of the saved image. PageSaver can capture frames and flash files.

Windows Software via Internet Explorer

WebShot - You may want to save the screenshot using IE for testing purposes in which case you need to use WebShot which is a tiny executable written in C by Nathan Moinvaziri. It is available in both a GUI format and a command-line format. WebShot is able to capture any URL and handles frames, and flash files and can also capture java applets. The processing time is somewhat slow for some reason however compared to the other tools. WebShot offers a ton of options when using its command line version.

OSX Software via Safari

webkit2png - is the official command line tool for the Mac which uses python and the WebKit rendering engine, which is used in Safari.

Paparazzi - If you need a simpler GUI try Paparazzi which is a great shell on top of webkit2png, making your life much easier. Paparazzi like PageSaver has many similar options you can set for your captured screenshot images.

Joost, which is pronounced “Juiced” from the makers of Skype is planning to do to Television what Napster did to the music industry. The business plan is to make money from commercials and share that revenue with content partners. While it runs on any PC today, Joost will eventually start selling TiVo / Xbox like hardware due to its graphic intensive nature. With time most TV watchers will switch from cable or sattelite to super highspeed internet connections that feeds into their flatscreen TVs. So, what does this mean for the future? What can it do for you today? I took the Joost beta for a test spin to find out.

I installed Joost on a Windows XP machine. It is only offered for Windows at the time. The installation was a snap and the sign-up process took less than 1 minute. Joost has a super simple user interface and needs little to no user interaction initially. Upon loading Joost, it goes into full screen mode and starts to play content, mirroring the experience of turning on your TV. This is quite unique compared to online video sites today such as YouTube or iTunes. It is a direct competition to TV. If you want to give it a whirl yourself, I can send you an invite. Just add your email below. Here are some screenshots and some details on its features:

First Impressions

User interaction is optional. This a very cool feature and I can see other websites will start copying this format soon.

Sound quality is great. Video is not HD quality but is quite good.

Content available from MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and SI to name a few. CBS just signed with Joost so soon you will be able to watch shows like CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, CBS Evening News, CBS Sportsline, and Survivor. There are also a ton of independent channels from around the world such as The Soccer Channel, U.S. Soccer, XL Recordings Channel, Red Bull, Roadrunner Records, and Brazilian Music Channel.

“Community watching”: Joost has a chat widget, which looks very promising. This is where things get interactive. You can talk to other people who are watching the same content. It also shows the count of people watching the show

Advertisements: are already plugged in between clips. Small text and banner ads are also shown in the corner of the screen periodically. Clicking on links shrinks the application nicely to the bottom of your screen while you surf the web.

Short URLs: You can link to any video on Joost via the tiny url format.

Rating: Shows can be rated by users

Search: The results can be saved a channel which is very powerful. I wish my TiVo had this feature. But like TiVo you can pause, rewind and fast-forward.

Performance: is not very smooth on my test machine which has a 2.4GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM. I was at about 90% CPU usage in full screen mode and 65% at using the windowed mode. At times I do get choppy sound and pauses in the stream. Joost uses a P2P technology that is somewhat similar to bit torrent, so while you are watching a clip you are also uploading it to other viewers.

Joost has tons of potential. As more companies start creating Joost Channels their competition will have to do the same. We will probably see more top name brands creating original programming and having their own channel on Joost.

Will Joost do a revenue sharing deal with amateur content makers? If so, will the YouTube crowd migrate to Joost? Will Joost stay free and adopt the Google model or go the NetFlix route and become an online VOD service? How will Google respond? What about iTunes? I’m sure others are frantically working to come up with similar competing products. Are cable companies worried about losing subscribers or will Joost just help boost the demand for their broadband services? How long before we see a Joost Mobile service that would compete with the likes of MobiTV and Helio? How long before we have an open source version of Joost?
